Procedure of Flight Mission

1. Outlook May ~ November
  • CWB Forecast Center: Tien-Chiang Yen / De-Jung Wu / Shou-Wen Lin / Kuo-Chen Lu
  • Outlook of tropical cyclone activities in north-western Pacific ocean.
2. Alert and draw up the flight mission Day(-4) ~ Day(-2)
  • CWB Forecast Center: Tien-Chiang Yen / De-Jung Wu / Shou-Wen Lin / Kuo-Chen Lu
  • NTU: Chun-Chien Wu / Po-Hsiung Lin / Kun-Hsuan Chou
  • AIDC: Chia-Gsiang Tsao
  • The forecast of the development of typhoons which may enter the alert area (longitude 123~130 degrees west, latitude 15~23 degrees north) within 48~96h.
  • NTU collects each targeted observation products and model forecast.
  • CWB provides forecast and operational opinions.
  • Design the flight route and application for flight plan.
  • Inform flight crews to stand by.
3. Decision of flight mission Day(-1)

  • AIDC: Chia-Gsiang Tsao
  • Based on the 24-h track forecast from numerical models to partially modify flight route.
  • Decide whether the flight mission will be executed.
4. Operation Day(0)
  • NTU: Chun-Chien Wu / Po-Hsiung Lin / Kun-Hsuan Chou / Chung-I Hsu
  • AIDC: Chia-Gsiang Tsao
  • Setup of the flight operation center at CWB.
  • On-board scientists arrive at AIDC 2~3h before take off.
  • Set up the software and hardware on the aircraft and attend the briefing meeting before take-off.
  • Observation, communication with the flight operation center and transmit the dropsonde data by satellite phone.
  • After-flight debriefing.
5. Review Day(1)  
  • The end of the mission.
  • Debriefing.
  • Deliver the original data to the flight operation center.
